WIGWAM
In 1905, Herbert Chesebro, Lawrence Bentz, and Robert Ehaney founded the Hand Knit Hosiery Company from the remains of the Sheboygan Knitting Company, which was destroyed in a fire. Originally, the company served the Wisconsin lumber industry and in the 1910's began experimenting with athletic socks. In 1957, the name of the company was changed to Wigwam and shortly after began manufacturing headware in addition to socks. In 1996, the first merino wool socks were introduced, allowing a natural material to outperform synthetics.
Today, Wigwam is still run by the Chesebro family, manufactures all products in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and sources 85% of its raw materials from the United States. Employees go through a 4-year apprenticeship program and remain with the company for an average of 17 years.
